letter to the residents
from Jolene Jeffe, Town Supervisor, as printed in the EA Bee, June 20, 2010

 "Aurora's Senior Center Presents
  Variety of Services..."

Have you ever had the opportunity to visit the Aurora Senior Citizens Center?  Many wonder from across the threshold what it has to offer and I would like to take this opportunity to answer some of those questions!

The doors at the Senior Citizens Center are open to all who have turned the magical age of 55.  Upon entering, you always encounter a smiling face.  The staff is readily available to answer your questions or concerns.  Many times you see a younger face looking for assistance and guidance. They may have a mom, dad or grandparent that needs a social outlet.
The Center offers avenues to just socialize and is also a resource for the many services offered by Erie County Senior Services. As a convenience to Aurora residents, as well as those from nearby communities, the schedule includes HEAP outreaches, tax preparation, and AARP Defensive Driving courses. There are also numerous classes to promote positive health.  If you are looking for exercise, line dancing, tai chi, or a healthy living seminar – the Center is the place.  The fitness room, with treadmills, ellipticals, and stationary bicycles, offers everyone a chance to exercise at their own pace.  This month featured a nutrition program titled “Whole Grains – the Whole Truth”.

If your interest is music, you can join a retired music teacher for an afternoon practicing with the Senior Notes singing group. The group performs for other seniors or just for their personal pleasure. The singers always have a theme to their programs.  Whether its spring flowers or rain drops, it is always enjoyable! If you need to challenge your mind, you can always find a game of scrabble, pinochle, bridge, or euchre in progress and we are always looking for a few new players.

The timeless craft of quilting is a regular activity as we offer both Redwork and traditional classes. Volunteer instructors are certain to bring out your quilting talents!  Keeping up with our woodcarvers is another adventure.  Again we have a retired teacher volunteering to instruct the many levels and abilities in attendance.  If you’ve been to the Erie County Fair and have seen the displays, you will recognize the names from our class on the ribbons!

In between all the activities, the Center offers the Senior Nutrition Lunch Program. Where else can you go to enjoy a balanced, wholesome lunch at a minimal cost?  Dieticians design the weekly menus to meet various nutritional needs and the meals taste great too!

The Center is always looking for residents’ input as well.  If there’s a topic that interests you or a health issue you would like explained, our employees and volunteers will endeavor to find the answer or maybe even a speaker to present.
The mission at the Center is to provide services to all walks of life. What once was a purely social scene has now become a quality of life for many today. Please don’t hesitate to call (652-7934), stop in (101 King St.), or check our web site www.townofaurora.com – I challenge you to just try to keep up with our seniors!
